Centers for Independent Living (CILs) provide, at no cost,
consumer-controlled education and advocacy services to empower people with
disabilities to live independently. Key services include self-advocacy
training, navigating systems (housing, education), peer counseling, and systems
advocacy to change policies, aiming to remove barriers to community
integration.
Education Services

Living Skills Training: Classes and workshops covering budgeting,
personal care, household management, social skills, and academic success.
- Self-Advocacy
Training: Coaching on how to communicate needs, assert rights,
and make informed choices.
- Youth
Transitions: Assisting students with disabilities in navigating
the move from high school to post-secondary life.
- Community
Education: Training the public and organizations to break down
stereotypes and create accessible environments.
Advocacy Services

Advocacy: Staff assist individuals in navigating systems such as
healthcare, housing, and education to secure necessary services.
- Systems
Advocacy: Working to change policies, laws, and regulations to
improve accessibility and equality for the disability community.
- Peer
Support: Connecting individuals with mentors who have lived
experience to help them develop confidence and self-advocacy skills.
- Legal
& Rights Advocacy: Providing knowledge of the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) and other disability rights laws.
