Education & Advocacy Services

Centers for Independent Living (CILs) provide, at no cost, consumer-controlled education and advocacy services to empower people with disabilities to live independently. Key services include self-advocacy training, navigating systems (housing, education), peer counseling, and systems advocacy to change policies, aiming to remove barriers to community integration.

Education Services

  • Independent Living Skills Training: Classes and workshops covering budgeting, personal care, household management, social skills, and academic success.
  • Self-Advocacy Training: Coaching on how to communicate needs, assert rights, and make informed choices.
  • Youth Transitions: Assisting students with disabilities in navigating the move from high school to post-secondary life.
  • Community Education: Training the public and organizations to break down stereotypes and create accessible environments.

Advocacy Services

  • Individual Advocacy: Staff assist individuals in navigating systems such as healthcare, housing, and education to secure necessary services.
  • Systems Advocacy: Working to change policies, laws, and regulations to improve accessibility and equality for the disability community.
  • Peer Support: Connecting individuals with mentors who have lived experience to help them develop confidence and self-advocacy skills.
  • Legal & Rights Advocacy: Providing knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other disability rights laws.

These services are designed to ensure individuals have control over their lives and full participation in their communities.
